What is the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill?
The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, in most aspects, looks and works like a regular treadmill. AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill was originally conceived by Dr. Robert Whalen to design effective exercise regimens for NASA’s astronauts. Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology has been adapted by AlterG for the use in training and rehabilitation. Cleared by the FDA in 2008, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is a medical device that can be used for:
- Lower body injury & surgery rehabilitation
- Rehab after total joint replacement
- Neurologic retraining
- Gait training in neurologic patients
- Strengthening & conditioning in older patients
- Aerobic conditioning
- Weight control & reduction
- Sport specific conditioning programs
- Stress related injury
- For athletes
- For trainers
- For performance enhancement
Un-weighting is achieved in the AlterG by using air in a pressure-controlled chamber to gently lift the user. Precise calibration using our patented technology allows specific un-weighting from 100-20% of the user’s body weight in 1% increment which is something no other un-weighting modality can do.
How does it work?
The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill creates a lifting force that allows ultra-low impact. Once you are fit on the machine, the belt starts moving and you are free to adjust the speed and incline, as in a regular treadmill. You can also control how much weight you want to feel. You can reduce your weight to about 20 percent, roughly the same sensation astronauts experience on the moon.
With less gravity to fight, exercise becomes pain-free. The strain on your knees, hips and lower back disappears, reducing the amount of impact on your joints thereby allowing ease and comfort while walking or running.
If you have gone through a surgery or suffered an injury, you know that the recovery process is long and challenging. Whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, a senior citizen or a young competitor, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill organized for you at Optimum Rehab Physical Therapy will help to optimize your treatment outcome so that you can return fast to the activities you love.
